Sandy Ojang Onor (INEC: ONOR SANDY OJANG) is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate for the election of 16 January 2027, with Babangida Umar as running mate, and was Senator for Cross River Central from 2019 to 2023. He was born in Ikom, Cross River State, on 14 February 1966; his home community is Nsofang, in today's Etung LGA. He attended St Martin's Primary School, Ikom, St Francis Primary School, Obubra, and St Brendan's College, Iyamoyong, and studied history at the University of Calabar (BA 1987, PhD 1993). He taught history at the University of Calabar, rising to Senior Lecturer in 1997, and left in 1999 to become Executive Chairman of Etung Local Government Council (1999-2002). He later chaired the Cross River State Local Government Service Commission and served Governor Liyel Imoke as Commissioner for Agriculture and then for Environment, until Imoke suspended him in December 2013 and left him out of a January 2014 recall after he backed a rival for the 2015 governorship ticket. He returned to the university as an associate professor in 2016 and was promoted professor of history in 2019. His books include "The Ejagham Nation in the Cross River Region of Nigeria" (1994) and "Foundations of Nigeria's Unity" (2021). A PDP member from at least 1999, he stood as the Labour Party's candidate for the Cross River Central Senate seat in March 2015 and lost, then rejoined the PDP on 21 October 2017. He won the seat in February 2019 with 80,126 votes; a petition by the APC's Victor Ndoma-Egba failed at the tribunal and, on 2 November 2019, at the Court of Appeal. In the Senate he was vice-chairman of the Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND. He won the PDP governorship primary in May 2022 but lost the March 2023 election to Bassey Otu (APC), 179,636 votes to 258,619; his petition was dismissed by the tribunal, the Court of Appeal and, on 12 January 2024, the Supreme Court. In 2025-2026 the PDP split into a faction backed by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, led by National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed, and a rival faction led by Kabiru Turaki. Onor, a long-standing Wike ally, sat on the Wike-backed faction's National Caretaker Committee from December 2025 to March 2026. After the Supreme Court voided the rival faction's Ibadan convention on 30 April 2026 and INEC recognised the Mohammed-led leadership, that faction declared Onor, its only aspirant, its consensus presidential candidate on 26 May 2026. The Turaki-led faction named former President Goodluck Jonathan on 30 May 2026, but INEC's final list of 12 September 2026 carries Onor as the PDP candidate.

He was Executive Chairman of Etung LGA (1999-2002), Cross River coordinator of the 2003 Obasanjo/Atiku campaign and, for years, Director-General of PDP campaign organisations in the state. In 2008, after the Court of Appeal annulled Governor Liyel Imoke's election, he was billed to run against Imoke in the rerun on the Action Congress (later ACN, now defunct; it has no party record here) platform, but stood down and led Imoke's campaign instead (one outlet; low confidence on whether he formally joined the AC). He served as a commissioner under Imoke, broke with him by backing Goddy Jedy Agba for the 2015 ticket, was dropped from the Central senatorial caucus in March 2014 and suspended by the state party executive on 7 November 2014. The exit day was not found: the end date stored is 15 February 2015, the Labour Party campaign flag-off at which he was already its senatorial candidate, i.e. the latest date by which he had left.
