Former executive chairman of Awka South Local Government (years not found), he was declared elected state chairman at a disputed congress on the night of Monday 4 Dec 2017 after his rival Okelekwe Kodilichukwu stepped down; the then state chairman, Chukwudi Umeaba, said he had suspended that congress. Nwobu later cited a 24 May 2018 FCT High Court judgment (Justice A.O. Musa) that upheld the executive elected on 4 Dec 2017 and voided a caretaker committee under Umeaba. From September 2018 he chaired a state caretaker committee installed by the national leadership (separate entry). On 9 Jun 2021 the FCT High Court (Justice Olukayode Adeniyi), in Samuel Anyakorah's suit HC/CV/774/2021 in which Nwobu was a defendant, nullified the March 2021 designation of the state chairman and executive, and the national leadership dissolved his executive; the Court of Appeal, Abuja, set that judgment aside on 30 Jul 2021 for lack of territorial jurisdiction, restoring him and Valentine Ozigbo's governorship candidacy. Endorsed by the party's 2019 Assembly candidates for the 2022 state congress, he was described as a former chairman by 31 Mar 2022, and Okey Asolo was acting chairman of the Nwobu-led faction in April 2022. The Tribune (2024) says he presided for three years.
