Ahmed Hassan Barata (INEC: Barata Ahmed Hassan) is the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Adamawa South in the Senate election of 16 January 2027 (INEC final list, 12 September 2026). From Shelleng in Adamawa State, he was born on 13 February 1960 according to the NIBC Who's Who, which lists a diploma from the State Polytechnic, Yola; he declared a first leaving certificate, a Teachers Grade II certificate and an MBA to INEC. He is a businessman. The same directory lists him as a local council vice-chairman in 1991 and a House of Representatives member in 1992-93. He represented Guyuk/Shelleng Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from 1999 to 2007, and he was chairman of Shelleng Local Government in 2010. He won the PDP primary for Adamawa South for 2011 with 738 votes, ahead of Felix Tangwami and the sitting senator Grace Bent. When Bent claimed she had won a rerun, the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed her suit. He then won the seat and served as senator from 2011 to 2015, chairing the Senate Committee on Culture and Tourism. He moved between the PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC) several times. He joined the APC on 14 February 2014 and came fourth in its Adamawa governorship primary of 7 September 2014 with 452 votes. He returned to the PDP on 24 September 2014. On 7 December 2014 he walked out of the PDP senatorial primary, calling it fraudulent. He rejoined the APC on 8 April 2015. In 2022-23 he was Director-General of Aishatu Binani's APC governorship campaign. In March 2023 the APC executives of his Ketembere ward announced his suspension, alleging anti-party activities and the withholding of relief food items; no response from him or ruling by higher party organs was found. By October 2025 he was in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he spoke for Binani's bloc in the party's 2026 congress dispute. That bloc moved to the NDC when Binani joined it on 1 May 2026; the date he joined the NDC was not found.
