Babangida Umar, reported in full as Babangida Modibbo Umar and listed by INEC as "Umaru Babangida", is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) vice-presidential candidate, as running mate to Sandy Onor, for the presidential election of 16 January 2027. He is from Adamawa State and lives in Yola. INEC's final list of candidates gives his age as 61 and his declared qualifications as the First School Leaving Certificate, the West African School Certificate and a Diploma; the schools and years were not found. Little about him is on public record before 2025: no earlier public office, occupation or party post was found. On 22 February 2025 he was elected unopposed as the PDP's North-East Zonal Chairman, styled the party's National Vice-Chairman (North-East), at a zonal congress in Bauchi, and the new zonal executive was inaugurated on 3 March 2025. In the party's 2025-2026 split he served with the Wike-backed faction led by National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed, which in May and June 2026 named him to its governorship screening committee and to its appeal panel for the gubernatorial and presidential primaries. In July 2026 Onor and the party's National Working Committee chose him as running mate, and the PDP confirmed the ticket on 2 August 2026, the day after INEC displayed the candidates' particulars. INEC's final list of 12 September 2026 includes the Onor-Umaru ticket. The rival PDP faction led by Tanimu Turaki rejected it.

Elected unopposed as the PDP's North-East Zonal Chairman on Saturday 22 February 2025 at the zonal congress held at Government House, Bauchi, where all 22 zonal posts went unopposed; he succeeded Rev. Emmanuel Bovoa of Taraba State. The zone's chairman is styled the party's National Vice-Chairman (North-East) and sits on the National Working Committee. The congress went ahead a day after the Federal High Court, Abuja, ordered the status quo kept in suit FHC/ABJ/CS/298/2025, brought by other party members against the PDP and its officers (he was not a party to it); no later ruling was found. Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed, represented by his deputy Auwal Jatau, inaugurated the new zonal executive on Monday 3 March 2025. In the 2025-2026 PDP split he served with the Wike-backed faction (the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led NWC); on 19 April 2026, when other zonal chairmen floated a "doctrine of necessity" takeover, he counselled waiting for the Supreme Court. He still held the office when he was chosen as running mate in July 2026.

The Punch first reported the choice on 10 July 2026, quoting an NWC member who said Onor and the NWC had settled on him after consultations and that his details had been uploaded to INEC's nomination portal, which closed at 6 pm on 11 July 2026; the day of the upload was not published. On 15 July 2026 the party rebutted a report that the pair had not been uploaded. INEC displayed the candidates' particulars (Form EC9) on 1 August 2026, and the PDP's National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, confirmed the ticket on Sunday 2 August 2026. INEC's final list of 12 September 2026 confirms it (SN 14). The rival faction's Interim National Working Committee, led by Tanimu Turaki, rejected the Onor-Umaru ticket and insisted on Goodluck Jonathan. Poll day is 16 January 2027. A running mate is nominated, not elected at a primary.
