Darlington Nwokocha (listed by INEC as Nwokocha Darlington Gideon, 59) is the Labour Party (LP) candidate for Abia Central Senatorial District in the Senate election of 16 January 2027 (INEC final list, 12 September 2026). His home town is Umungalagu, Eziama Nvosi, in Isiala Ngwa South LGA. He served two terms in the Abia State House of Assembly (2007-2015) on the PDP, for Isiala Ngwa South according to Leadership and Daily Trust (OrderPaper says Isiala Ngwa North). He represented the Isiala Ngwa North/Isiala Ngwa South federal constituency in the House of Representatives from 2015 to 2023, receiving his certificate of return in April 2015 and being re-elected on the PDP in the election of 23 February 2019. He chaired the House Committee on Insurance and Actuarial Matters in the 9th House, was deputy chairman of the Federal Character committee, and chaired ad hoc committees on Niger-Delta Power Holding, a pipeline explosion and fire in Rivers State, and the failure of the NHIS. In July 2021 the Abia PDP chairman called him a "true party man". In June 2022 he moved from the PDP to the LP and won its Abia Central Senate primary unopposed on 7 June 2022. INEC returned him elected on 27 February 2023 (92,116 votes; Austin Akobundu of the PDP second). He was sworn in with the 10th Senate and named Senate Minority Whip on 4 July 2023; he was also vice chairman of the Senate committee on NDDC. The tribunal in Umuahia dismissed Akobundu's petition on 11 September 2023, but on 4 November 2023 the Court of Appeal held that Nwokocha's name was not on the LP membership register submitted to INEC and declared Akobundu elected. The LP rejected the verdict; the Court of Appeal in Abuja (N5 million costs) and the Supreme Court on 12 December 2023 (N2 million costs) dismissed his motions to review it. He became secretary of the LP National Caretaker Committee on 4 September 2024 and Interim National Secretary of the Nenadi Usman-led committee on 18 July 2025, and was still acting national secretary in February 2026; the rival Julius Abure-led faction announced his suspension on 7 May 2025. At the party's convention on 28 April 2026 Iheanacho Obioma was elected National Secretary. He was elected Global President of the University of Port Harcourt Alumni Association on 21 June 2025, and emerged as the LP's consensus candidate for Abia Central at its primary of 30 May 2026.

The tribunal in Umuahia dismissed Akobundu's petition on 11 September 2023; on 4 November 2023 the Court of Appeal (Owerri Division, sitting in Lagos) held Nwokocha was not on the LP membership register submitted to INEC and declared Akobundu duly elected. Review motions were dismissed by the Court of Appeal, Abuja (reported 8 December 2023) and the Supreme Court (12 December 2023).
