Giade LGA · Bauchi State · A citizen’s guide
The primary school, the health centre, the market, the road inside your area. That is council work, and most of the money for it comes from Abuja. Every month Giade is shared a part of what Nigeria earns. Let’s see how much, what it passes through, and who to ask.
01 / The basics
Local government is the tier closest to you, and the constitution gives it its own share of the federation’s income. The amount is set by formula, not by anyone’s goodwill.
Oil and gas income, company taxes and customs duties go into the Federation Account. Local governments share 20.60% of it. They also share 35% of VAT, the 7.5% you pay on many goods and services, plus smaller items such as the ₦50 levy on bank transfers.
See how Bauchi State’s own share worksThe figure we show is what FAAC shared to Giade. Whether all of it reached the council’s own account is a separate question, and a fair one to ask.
FAAC works out the council’s figure every month.
The money goes through a joint account with the state.
The state is to hand each council its share.
The council’s budget decides what it pays for.
02 / Your daily life
These are duties the constitution gives a council. They are examples, not a record of what Giade paid for.
Councils share the running of primary schools and primary health centres with the state. When the roof leaks or there is no nurse on duty, this is one of the purses that should answer.
What did the council spend on our school or health centre this year?
The street to your house, the drains beside it and the lights along it are council work. So are markets and motor parks.
Which streets or drains are in this year’s plan, and when does work start?
Clearing refuse is on the council’s list of duties in the constitution. If the dump at the junction keeps growing, the council is the first office to ask.
Who collects refuse in our ward, and how often are they paid to come?
Council workers, primary school teachers and health staff are often paid from this money before anything else. In many councils, little is left for projects after salaries.
After salaries, how much was left for projects this month?
03 / From Abuja to your council
Five steps, every month. The first three are the same for every council in Nigeria.
Revenue agencies
During the month, the tax service, Customs and the petroleum regulator collect revenue and pay it into the Federation Account and the VAT pool.
The committee
The following month, the Federation Account Allocation Committee shares the money among the federal government, the states and the local governments.
The formula
The local governments’ portion is divided among all 774 councils. Every council’s figure is published in the monthly report, and that is the figure on this site.
The joint account
The constitution sends council money into a State Joint Local Government Account, and the state is to pass each council its share. In July 2024 the Supreme Court ruled that councils should be paid directly.
Chairman and councillors
The chairman proposes a budget and the councillors pass it. That budget, not the allocation, says what the money is for.
Legal basis: Constitution, sections 7 and 162 and the Fourth Schedule. The 52.68 / 26.72 / 20.60 split is the revenue allocation formula in force since 2002.
04 / Follow the money
A council is small enough to question in person. Go with one figure and one question.
Look at Giade’s newest figure, whether it went up or down, and how it compares with the councils around it.
See the 2026 figures, month by monthUsman Muhammad Saleh is the chairman of Giade Local Government. Your ward also has a councillor whose job is to speak for it. Ask what the council received this month and what it paid for in your ward.
If a neighbouring council with a similar allocation has working street lights and yours does not, that is a question worth asking in public.

Only months in our records are counted. A missing month does not mean nothing was shared.
