Seyi Makinde (Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde) is the Governor of Oyo State, in office since 29 May 2019, and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) presidential candidate for the election of 16 January 2027, with former State Security Service Director-General Musa Lawal Daura as running mate. He was born in Ibadan on 25 December 1967, attended St Paul's and St Michael's primary schools in Yemetu and Bishop Phillips Academy, Ibadan (1985), and graduated in electrical engineering from the University of Lagos in 1990. After national service and two years as a pupil engineer at Shell (1990-1992) and five at Rebold International (1992-1997), he founded Makon Engineering and Technical Services in 1997; it grew into the Makon Group, of which he is still described as Group Managing Director. His 2019 asset declaration valued his companies at about N48.15 billion. He entered politics in 2007 as the ANPP candidate for the Oyo South Senate seat and lost. He then joined the PDP but did not get its 2011 senatorial ticket, pulled out of its 2014 governorship primary, and ran for governor on the SDP ticket in 2015, finishing fifth. Back in the PDP from 2017, he won the governorship in March 2019 with 515,621 votes; the Supreme Court upheld his election on 18 December 2019. He was re-elected in March 2023 with 63.37% of the vote. On his first day in office he dissolved the elected local councils; on 7 May 2021 the Supreme Court held the dissolution unlawful and ordered the officials' pay restored, and his government paid in instalments after garnishee proceedings. As governor he has been sued in several chieftaincy disputes. In July 2026 a Federal High Court set aside, on his government's suit, a blanket EFCC request for Oyo contract records; allegations, including a petition to the EFCC, that the Bodija explosion relief fund was misused are denied by his government, and no charge has been found. As a sitting governor he has immunity from prosecution, though not from investigation. In the PDP he was one of the "G5" governors who refused to campaign for Atiku Abubakar in 2023, and in 2025-2026 he led the faction behind Kabiru Turaki. On 14 May 2026 he moved to the APM, which affirmed him as its presidential candidate on 30 May 2026. He won both governor terms on the PDP ticket; his current term is recorded under his current party, the APM.
