Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso (sworn name Musa Mohammed Rabiu Kwankwaso) was Governor of Kano State from 1999 to 2003 and from 2011 to 2015, and is the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate, running mate to Peter Obi, for the 16 January 2027 presidential election. He was born on 21 October 1956 in Kwankwaso, Madobi, Kano State. His father, Musa Saleh Kwankwaso, was District Head of Madobi and died in 2020. After craft and technical schooling in Wudil and Kano he joined Kano State's Water Resources and Engineering Construction Agency (WRECA) in 1975 and rose to Principal Engineer. He took National and Higher National Diplomas in civil (water resources) engineering at Kaduna Polytechnic (1980), studied at Middlesex Polytechnic and completed an MSc in water engineering at Loughborough University of Technology in 1985. In 2022 he completed a PhD in civil engineering at Sharda University, India; fact-checkers rated a 2023 claim that the degree was fraudulent as false. He entered politics in 1992 in the Social Democratic Party of that era, was elected to the House of Representatives for Madobi and served as Deputy Speaker from December 1992 until the military takeover of November 1993. He sat in the 1994–95 National Constitutional Conference, joined the PDP in 1998 and was elected Governor of Kano in 1999; his first government established Kano University of Science and Technology, Wudil. He lost re-election to Ibrahim Shekarau in 2003, was Minister of Defence from July 2003 until he resigned in November 2006, and later served as a presidential envoy on Darfur and Somalia and on the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission until 2010. Re-elected governor in 2011, he founded Northwest University, Kano and ran a large foreign-scholarship programme, and his supporters' Kwankwasiyya movement adopted its red caps. He joined the APC with four other governors in November 2013, came second in its 2014 presidential primary and was Senator for Kano Central from 2015 to 2019, returning to the PDP in 2018. In 2022 he led The National Movement into the New Nigeria Peoples Party, became its National Leader and 2023 presidential candidate, and placed fourth nationally while winning Kano. After a long leadership dispute in the NNPP he left in March 2026, spent five weeks in the ADC and joined the NDC on 3 May 2026. His Kwankwasiyya Development Foundation has funded postgraduate scholarships abroad since 2019. A Kano commission of inquiry set up by his successor indicted him in 2004 over N850 million of ecological funds; his court challenge failed on an interlocutory appeal in 2006 and no prosecution followed. Since 2015 the EFCC has examined petitions over Kano pension funds and local-government contributions to his 2014 primary campaign and questioned him in 2021; he calls the petitions politically motivated. No charge has been found and he has not been convicted of any offence. Early books about him include Mukhtari Abubakar Kwaru's "Kwankwaso" (2001).

INEC published his particulars on 1 August 2026 and listed him on its final list of 12 September 2026. The election, first fixed for 20 February 2027, was rescheduled to 16 January 2027.
