Samuel Ode (born 7 November 1968) is the Deputy Governor of Benue State, in office since 29 May 2023, and the All Progressives Congress deputy governorship candidate, running mate to Governor Hyacinth Alia, for the election of 6 February 2027 (INEC final list, 10 October 2026). Alia said on 1 September 2025 that there was "no vacancy" for a deputy governor in 2027. A lawyer and administrator from Otukpo Local Government Area, he studied law at Benue State Polytechnic, Ugbokolo (diploma, 1987), theatre arts at the University of Jos (BA, 1993) and public administration (master's, 2008) and law (LL.B) at the University of Abuja, and was called to the bar by December 2018. He was pioneer state secretary of the National Democratic Party in Benue, Special Assistant to Governor George Akume (2005), caretaker chairman of Otukpo Local Government Council, and Special Adviser to Governor Gabriel Suswam on local government and chieftaincy affairs (from 2007) before becoming Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs in the reconstituted Jonathan cabinet of April 2010. He later chaired the board of the Upper Niger River Basin Development Authority. He was a PDP governorship aspirant in 2014 and an APC chieftain by September 2018. Named running mate to Emmanuel Jime on 30 November 2018, he lost the 2019 election when the Jime ticket took 345,155 votes against 434,473 for Samuel Ortom's. In the 2022-23 APC governorship primary he was runner-up with 22,319 votes to Hyacinth Alia's 410,682, and was then chosen as Alia's running mate (a choice contested by Benue South APC elders). The ticket won the 18 March 2023 election with 473,933 votes. A PDP petition alleging that he presented a forged certificate to INEC was dismissed by the tribunal, the Court of Appeal (which held forgery was not proved) and the Supreme Court. Wesley University, Ondo, honoured him at its 2023 convocation.
