The Sokoto APC chairman said when Aliyu named him running mate on 12 July 2022 that he began his career as a school teacher, served with the Nigerian Ports Authority and the Department of Petroleum Resources, was a Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning and was Sole Administrator of the Sabon Birni local government council (dates not found; a party statement carried by NAN). The Aliyu-Gobir ticket was declared winner of the 18 March 2023 election with 453,661 votes against 404,632 for the PDP, and he was sworn in on 29 May 2023. As a co-respondent he faced a PDP petition that questioned his qualifications and primary-school certificate; the tribunal dismissed it on 30 September 2023, the Court of Appeal on 27 November 2023 and the Supreme Court on 25 January 2024. A statement from the Deputy Governor's press office, reported by Vanguard on 15 July 2026, says he oversees the Ministry of Works and that Governor Aliyu endorsed him as running mate for a second term.

INEC final list of candidates (Governorship, Sokoto State), published 2026-10-10 — SN 5; INEC name: MOHAMMED GOBIR IDRIS; age 50; male; qualification (as declared to INEC): UNIVERSITY FIRST SCHOOL LEAVING CERTIFICATE NATIONAL TECHNICAL CERTIFICATE ADVANCER NATIONAL TECH. CERTIFICATE; governorship candidate: Aliyu Ahmed Sokoto · Named by Governor Ahmad Aliyu as his running mate for a second term: Vanguard (15 July 2026) reports the governor's endorsement of Deputy Governor Idris Mohammed Gobir in a statement from the Deputy Governor's press office (a statement from his own office, used only for the fact of the endorsement); the day the pair were submitted to INEC was not found, and he appears as running mate on INEC's final list (10 October 2026). His 2023 running-mate selection was announced on 12 July 2022. INEC reading checked on the rendered PDF (pdftotext -bbox) and CORRECTED: the word UNIVERSITY that sits under the qualification cell between the two Sokoto APC rows belongs to the governorship candidate's cell (USMANU DANFODIYO UNIVERSITY), not to him; his own qualifications are FIRST SCHOOL LEAVING CERTIFICATE, NATIONAL TECHNICAL CERTIFICATE, ADVANCER NATIONAL TECH. CERTIFICATE (as INEC prints it), and the INEC line quoted at the start of this note (as first parsed) wrongly begins his qualification with UNIVERSITY. INEC's surname-first order MOHAMMED GOBIR IDRIS corresponds to press usage Idris Mohammed Gobir (Vanguard, Daily Trust).
