Emeka Atuma is the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Abia Central Senatorial District in the Senate election of 16 January 2027 (INEC final list, 12 September 2026, which gives his age as 57). He comes from Ntalakwu, Oboro, in Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State. His House of Representatives profile gave his date of birth as January 1969, his education as a WASC and a B.Sc. in Estate Management from Enugu State University of (Science and) Technology, and his occupation as business; a 2025 Vanguard profile describes him as a contractor. He told INEC he holds a BSc and an MSc.
Elected on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform in 2003, he represented the Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South federal constituency in the House of Representatives from 2003 to 2007. He later left the PDP for the Social Democratic Party (SDP), whose national working committee named him National Organising Secretary on 8 March 2018, and on 2 February 2020 he formally joined the APC at a ceremony at his Ikwuano home.
In April 2022 he declared for the Abia governorship and on 26 May 2022 came second in the APC's indirect governorship primary with 150 votes to Ikechi Emenike's 672, after protesting the indirect mode. The party then recognised him as its Abia Central senatorial candidate on the strength of a repeat poll he said was held on 7 June 2022; Sam Onuigbo, returned winner of the 28 May 2022 senatorial primary, sued. The Federal High Court in Umuahia upheld Atuma on 4 October 2022, the Court of Appeal in Owerri reversed it (reported 1 December 2022), and the Supreme Court dismissed his appeal on 27 January 2023, affirming Onuigbo.
On 6 December 2024 President Bola Tinubu named him pioneer chairman of the South-East Development Commission, subject to Senate confirmation; the next day the nomination was withdrawn and Emeka Nworgu named instead. In February 2025 he said he would seek to unseat Governor Alex Otti in 2027, but in May 2026 he contested the Senate instead: after former Speaker Christopher Enweremadu stepped down in his favour, he won the APC direct primary of 18 May 2026 with 36,935 votes (Premium Times and Daily Post give Nkechi Nwaogu 11,451 and Sam Onuigbo 5,833; an APC statement of September 2026 put Nwaogu at 12,033). A group of party stakeholders wrote to the national leadership on 25 May 2026 alleging that no voting took place in several wards; no outcome was found. Nwaogu says she left the APC in May 2026 (the Abia APC disputes this) and is on INEC's final list as the Nigeria Democratic Congress candidate for the same seat.
