Ekong Sampson (INEC name: Akpan Ekong Sampson) is the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District in the Senate election of 16 January 2027 (INEC final list, 12 September 2026), seeking re-election to the seat he has held since 13 June 2023. INEC lists him as a 59-year-old man. He studied mass communication at The Polytechnic, Calabar, read law at the former University of Cross River State and was called to the Bar in 1991 (Nigerian Law School class of 1991); before 1999 he worked as a lawyer and journalist in Lagos, and in 1996 he published 'Law and Statesmanship: The Legacy of Sir Udo Udoma'. From about 1999 to 2003 he was chief legislative aide to Senator Udoma Udo Udoma. He then served as a councillor in the early 2000s, as Head of Council (chairman) of Mkpat Enin Local Government Area, and as a member of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly for the eight years of Godswill Akpabio's governorship (2007-2015; constituency not found). Under Governor Udom Emmanuel he was Commissioner for Rural Development (July 2015 until the cabinet was dissolved in October 2016), Special Adviser on Political and Legislative Affairs (confirmed 30 November 2016), Commissioner for Economic Development, Labour and Manpower Planning (from September 2018) and Commissioner for Environment and Petroleum Resources (sworn in 11 July 2019; out of the cabinet by January 2021). He won the PDP senatorial primary on 23 May 2022 with 368 votes and the Akwa Ibom South seat at the 25 February 2023 election with 79,327 votes to 33,256 for the APC's Martyns Udo-Inyang (declared in Eket on 27 February 2023); no election petition against his return was found. In the 10th Senate he has chaired the Committee on Solid Minerals Development since the committee reshuffle of 21 November 2023, is vice-chairman of the Committee on Education (Basic and Secondary), and was named on 18 March 2025 to the ad hoc committee investigating Cameroon's alleged annexation of Nigerian territory at Efiat-Mbo. The Senate Press Corps gave him a Legislative Excellence Award in December 2024. His letter leaving the PDP for the APC was read in plenary on 23 July 2025; he cited Governor Umo Eno's move to the APC. Some constituency groups publicly opposed his re-election bid in 2025-2026 over the spread of constituency projects. He was returned unopposed in the APC senatorial primary on 18 May 2026.
