Anthony Kelechi Apugo is the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) governorship candidate in Abia State for the election of 6 February 2027 (INEC final list, 10 October 2026), with Nwokoji Chris Nwaobilor as his running mate. INEC lists him as a 56-year-old man whose declared qualification is the First School Leaving Certificate (printed "FLSC"). He leads the NNPP in Abia. Daily Post reported on 9 October 2023 that he had been appointed acting state chairman of the party, promising "constructive opposition" and appealing to members who had left to return; later that month, as acting chairman, he moved the motion at the party's South East zonal conference in Awka that affirmed the expulsion of its 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and passed a vote of confidence in the party's founder, Boniface Aniebonam, and national chairman, Agbo Major. At a state congress in Umuahia reported on 25 January 2025 he was elected substantive state chairman, saying the party was focused on "taking over Abia as 2027 drew near". (In September 2024, during the NNPP's national leadership dispute, Vanguard quoted a Chief Ogaranya Ifemeje as the party's Abia chairman when he denied that the chapter had collapsed into the Labour Party.) He appeared on the list of governorship candidates INEC displayed in Umuahia in early September 2026. Details of the 2026 NNPP primary and of his career before the NNPP were not found in public sources as of October 2026.

How sources and review work

A reviewed source may establish that an allegation was made; it does not establish guilt. Open each record’s sources to read its evidence. Historical reporting may not establish a case’s current status.
