Before the ballot,
a life in the making.

The places, education and experiences behind this candidate.

Victor Chukwunonyelum Umeh (born 19 July 1962) is the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Anambra Central Senatorial District in the Senate election of 16 January 2027 (INEC final list, 12 September 2026), seeking re-election to the seat he holds. From Aguluzigbo in Anaocha LGA, he graduated from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 1984 and is an estate surveyor and valuer, principal consultant of V. C. Umeh & Co. A founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party in 1998 and its Anambra State treasurer, he left the PDP in 2001 and joined the founders of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), serving as its national vice chairman (South-East) and national treasurer. The party's National Working Committee made him acting national chairman on 15 December 2004 after suspending founding chairman Chekwas Okorie (the Supreme Court record dates his chairmanship from 2006). His tenure was fought out in court: Okorie's suits ended, by Umeh's account, with a Supreme Court ruling of 25 March 2011, and Okorie returned the party's registration certificate in March 2012; an Enugu High Court removed Umeh on 8 February 2013, but the Court of Appeal, Enugu set that aside on 15 July 2013; the Federal High Court, Abuja removed him again on 15 January 2014 on Maxi Okwu's suit, reversed by the Court of Appeal on 18 June 2014 and finally by the Supreme Court on 15 January 2016 (SC.565/2014). He handed over to Victor Oye on 6 June 2015. He was named an Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) in the 2013/2014 honours list. As APGA candidate for Anambra Central he lost to Uche Ekwunife (PDP) on 28 March 2015 (77,129 to 101,548), then won on appeal: the Court of Appeal voided her election on 7 December 2015 and the Supreme Court declined her appeal on 10 February 2017. The DSS held him for questioning over alleged sponsorship of pro-Biafra groups in March 2016 and released him on 4 March; no charge was reported and APGA called it political. He won the court-ordered rerun on 13 January 2018 with 64,879 votes and was sworn in on 18 January 2018, but lost the seat to Ekwunife on 23 February 2019; his petition failed at the tribunal (9 September 2019) and the Court of Appeal (1 November 2019). After losing the APGA primary on 28 May 2022 (151 votes to Dozie Nwankwo's 162) he moved to the Labour Party. The Federal High Court, Awka disqualified him on 27 January 2023 on a PDP suit, but the Court of Appeal restored his candidacy on 23 February 2023, and on 25 February he won with 103,608 votes (Nwankwo 69,702, Ekwunife 49,532). In the 10th Senate he chaired the Committee on Diaspora and NGOs (August 2023) and, from 4 February 2025, the Committee on National Identity Card and National Population. He moved to the African Democratic Congress on 12 March 2026 and, after resigning on 1 May, to the NDC (announced in the Senate on 5 May 2026). He was declared NDC candidate after the primary of 29 May 2026; he put the result at 11,964 votes to 718 for Nonso Nwabueze Oli, who disputed it.
