Before the ballot,
a life in the making.

The places, education and experiences behind this candidate.

Orji Uzor Kalu (born 21 April 1960) is the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Abia North Senatorial District in the Senate election of 16 January 2027 (INEC final list, 12 September 2026), seeking a third term in the seat he has held since 2019. Born in Aba, he attended Christ the King School, Aba and Government College Umuahia, and studied political science at the University of Maiduguri, which he left without a degree after being expelled during the "Ali Must Go" student protests. He built a palm-oil, furniture and NYSC-uniform trade into the Slok group (Slok Nigeria Ltd was incorporated on 6 May 1987), which later included the Daily Sun and New Telegraph newspapers and First International Bank. He chaired the Borno State Water Board (1985) and the Imo State Marketing and Supply Agency (1989), and sat in the House of Representatives in 1992-93 on the National Republican Convention. A founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he was elected Governor of Abia State in 1999, re-elected in 2003, and served from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2007. He left the PDP in 2006 to found the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA), on which he came fourth in the April 2007 presidential election (608,803 votes). On the PPA he lost the Abia North Senate race in 2011 (34,188 votes to Uche Chukwumerije's 83,206) and the court-ordered rerun of 5 March 2016 (25,814 to Mao Ohuabunwa's 26,009); a tribunal dismissed his petition against the rerun in September 2016. He had rejoined the PDP in 2012/13 and returned to the PPA by January 2015, and joined the APC on 16 November 2016. Abia State University withdrew the bachelor's degree it had awarded him while he was governor on 2 March 2013; a High Court restored it in 2018, but the Court of Appeal set that aside in November 2021. He won Abia North on the APC on 23 February 2019 (31,203 votes to Ohuabunwa's 20,801); a tribunal ordered supplementary polls, but the Court of Appeal, Owerri affirmed his election on 7 November 2019. He was Senate Chief Whip from 2 July 2019 until the 9th Senate ended in 2023. Re-elected on 25 February 2023 with 30,805 votes (Nnamdi Iro-Orji, LP, 27,540; Ohuabunwa, PDP, 15,175), he saw off the LP and PDP petitions at the tribunal (12 September 2023) and the Court of Appeal (6 November 2023), which held that his nullified conviction was no bar. He sought the Senate presidency in 2023 but withdrew before the 13 June vote, chaired the Senate Committee on Privatisation from August 2023 and, from 4 February 2025, the Committee on the South-East Development Commission. He won the APC Abia North primary on 18 May 2026 with 65,651 votes to Philip Nto's 2,103. The EFCC arrested him on 11 July 2007 and charged him, his former finance director Udeh Udeogu and Slok Nigeria Ltd with laundering Abia State funds; he denied the allegations and called the case persecution by the Obasanjo government. After the Supreme Court cleared the trial on 18 March 2016, the Federal High Court in Lagos convicted him on 5 December 2019 on 39 amended counts involving about N7.1-7.65 billion and sentenced him to 12 years. On 8 May 2020, on Udeogu's appeal, the Supreme Court declared the trial a nullity because the judge had already been elevated to the Court of Appeal, and ordered a retrial; Kalu said the court had affirmed his right to fair hearing, and he was released from Kuje on 3 June 2020. On 29 September 2021 the Federal High Court, Abuja barred his retrial as double jeopardy. The EFCC's appeal was struck out on 6 March 2024 over defective records, and on 21 March 2025 the Court of Appeal allowed it to be filed afresh; no ruling on it has been reported, and there is no subsisting conviction.
