Before the ballot,
a life in the making.

The places, education and experiences behind this candidate.

Nkechi Justina Nwaogu (born 29 May 1956) is the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Abia Central Senatorial District in the Senate election of 16 January 2027 (INEC final list, 12 September 2026, which gives her age as 61; her National Assembly profile and her 65th birthday in May 2021 put her birth on 29 May 1956). Born in Umuapu, Isiala Ngwa South, she was educated in Aba and in London (London College of Printing, 1979; Polytechnic of South Bank, 1981; MSc, Brunel University, 1984). Back in Nigeria from 1988 she was a banker (International Merchant Bank, Commerce Bank, pioneer manager of Diamond Bank's Aba branch), founded Libra Investments, a micro-credit firm, and sat on the Abia State Economic Advisory Board in 1991-93. According to the Abia State Government profile she sought governorship nominations in 1998/99 on the UNCP and All People's Party platforms, and held ANPP national finance posts in 1999-2002. She represented Obingwa/Osisioma Ngwa/Ugwunagbo in the House of Representatives on the ANPP platform from 2003 to 2007, then represented Abia Central in the Senate on the PDP platform from 2007 to 2015, chairing the committee on banking, insurance and other financial institutions in the 6th Senate and the committee on gas in the 7th. Emeka Atuma challenged her 2011 nomination over whether Osisioma Ngwa belongs to Abia Central; the Court of Appeal nullified it in December 2011, but the Supreme Court restored it on 17 May 2013. She was made a Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) in the 2014 honours list. Theodore Orji took the PDP ticket for 2015 and she joined the APC on 13 June 2015. As the APC candidate in February 2019 she came second to Orji (29,860 votes to 55,461), and the election tribunal dismissed her petition on 10 September 2019. From about 2017 she was pro-chancellor and chairman of the governing council of the University of Calabar; she had left that post by April 2022. She withdrew from the APC's 2023 Abia Central primary in May 2022, but said she would stay in the party. In 2026 she again sought the APC ticket. At the 18 May primary she was reported second to Emeka Atuma with 11,451 votes (the APC later said 12,033); she says she bought the form but did not take part. On 28 May she confirmed leaving the APC, and she became the NDC candidate. Rival NDC aspirant Blessing Ugbo says the ticket went to Nwaogu by consensus and has sued the NDC and INEC (pending). The Abia APC says Nwaogu is still on the APC register it submitted to INEC on 10 May 2026. She and the NDC say she resigned at ward level in early May and joined the NDC before that deadline. After the Supreme Court's 24 September 2026 judgment on party registers, her campaign said her candidacy was unaffected. No court ruling on her membership was found.

Presiding Justice Francis Adebiyi while setting aside the lower court’s decision of December 13th, 2011, said the sole ground for removing Senator Nwogu from office was not on election irregularities and non-compliance but a question of whether Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area is part of the senatorial district.

No votes published. INEC's age 61 conflicts with her NASS date of birth 29 May 1956 (age 70). Earlier, in the APC primary of 18 May 2026, Premium Times/Daily Post reported 11,451 votes for her (APC statement: 12,033, runner-up to Emeka Atuma); she says she bought the APC form but did not take part. The Abia APC says she is on its register submitted to INEC on 10 May 2026 and never resigned; she says she resigned at ward level in early May and the NDC says she joined before the 10 May deadline. After the Supreme Court's 24 September 2026 judgment restoring the register rules (INEC v. ZLP & Ors), her campaign said her candidacy is unaffected. No ruling on her membership found.
