Before the ballot,
a life in the making.

The places, education and experiences behind this candidate.

Mohammed Auwal Jatau (listed by INEC as Jatau Mohammed Auwal) is the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) candidate for Bauchi North Senatorial District in the Senate election of 16 January 2027 (INEC final list, 12 September 2026) and has been Deputy Governor of Bauchi State since 29 May 2023. The state government gives his date of birth as 1 January 1968 and his birthplace as Sakwa in Zaki Local Government Area; INEC lists him as 58. A Grade II teacher and trained nurse, he worked as a nurse clinician at the Bauchi and Katagum general hospitals (1995-1997) and as a nurse educator at the School of Nursing Education, Bauchi (1999-2003). He later took a bachelor’s degree in Education (Health) through the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (2012-2015) and a master’s in International Relations and Diplomacy at Baze University (2022). In the Bauchi State House of Assembly he was Speaker in 2003 and Minority Leader from 2007 to 2011, and he represented Zaki in the House of Representatives from 2011 to 2015 (state government profile). In December 2014 he won the PDP governorship primary with 368 votes, ahead of Babayo Garba Gamawa (116) and former Minister of State for Health Ali Pate (86); Governor Isa Yuguda was described as his political mentor. At the 11 April 2015 election he polled 282,650 votes and lost to Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar of the APC (654,934). Governor Bala Mohammed made him Commissioner for Health in September 2019. His petition against the 2019 Zaki result won a rerun in three polling units at the election tribunal (20 September 2019), a decision the Court of Appeal in Jos upheld on 14 November 2019; he won the rerun on 25 January 2020 by 15,405 votes to 15,307 for Omar Tata (APC) and returned to the House. Named Mohammed’s running mate in August 2022, he was elected on the ticket that won the 18 March 2023 governorship election with 525,280 votes and was sworn in as deputy governor on 29 May 2023. The Katagum Emirate conferred the traditional title Madugun Katagum on him in September 2024. He resigned from the PDP with effect from 1 May 2026, followed the governor into the APM, and was affirmed as its Bauchi North senatorial candidate at Government House, Bauchi, on 28 May 2026. He is married with seven children.
