Before the ballot,
a life in the making.

The places, education and experiences behind this candidate.

Enyinnaya Harcourt Abaribe (born 1 March 1955) is the Labour Party (LP) candidate for Abia South Senatorial District in the Senate election of 16 January 2027 (INEC final list, 12 September 2026), seeking a sixth term in a seat he has held since 2007. An economist from Obingwa LGA, he studied at Government College Umuahia and the University of Benin (BSc 1979, MSc 1982), lectured at Edo State University, Ekpoma (1982-85), and worked for SCOA Nigeria, NICON and, as managing director, Integrated Mortgage Company (1993-95), according to his Who's Who entry. He was Deputy Governor of Abia State under Orji Uzor Kalu (PDP) from 29 May 1999. During a long feud with Kalu, the State House of Assembly moved to impeach him twice in 2000 (a court nullified the impeachment) and again in 2003; he resigned on 7 March 2003, after which the Assembly voted him out anyway. He then ran for governor in 2003 as the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) candidate and lost to Kalu. Elected to the Senate on the PDP ticket in 2007, he was re-elected in 2011 (90,773 votes), 2015 (101,433) and 2019. An election tribunal held his 2015 win inconclusive on 12 October 2015 and ordered a partial rerun (no rerun or appeal ruling was found; he kept the seat), and dismissed the 2019 petition against him on 18 September 2019. He chaired the Senate Committee on Information by 2015 and was Senate Minority Leader from June 2019 until 27 May 2022, when he left the PDP after withdrawing from its Abia governorship primary. He won the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) ticket unopposed on 28 May 2022 and was re-elected on 25 February 2023 with 49,693 votes, ahead of Chinedu Onyeizu (LP, 43,903) and Governor Okezie Ikpeazu (PDP, 28,422); Onyeizu's petition was dismissed in June 2023. He has chaired the Senate Committee on Power since August 2023. He left APGA for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on 31 December 2025; when his defection was read in the Senate on 12 March 2026, Senate leaders and APGA said his seat should be declared vacant, while he said APGA had already suspended him indefinitely. On 4 May 2026 he moved to the LP, which adopted him by consensus at its primary of 30 May 2026. In April 2017 he stood surety for IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu; after Kanu left the country, the Federal High Court on 14 November 2018 ordered the sureties to pay their N100 million bonds, which he appealed (no final ruling found). The DSS detained him from 22 to 26 June 2018 on an allegation of sponsoring IPOB; he was released on administrative bail, and no charge was reported.

    Record notes

From his NIBC Who's Who entry (via BLERF), which dates it 1997: "Elected Member, House of Representatives, on the platform of United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP)". Not confirmed elsewhere; constituency, poll day and votes not found. The Abacha-transition National Assembly elections were held in April 1998 and the Assembly was never inaugurated after Abacha died. UNCP is defunct and has no party record, so party_acronym is empty. He himself said in 2021 "I have been in politics since 1998".
