The places, education and experiences behind this candidate.
Augustine Okwudiri Akobundu (known as Austin; born 10 March 1956), from Oloko in Ikwuano LGA, Abia State, is the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for Abia Central Senatorial District in the Senate election of 16 January 2027 (INEC final list, 12 September 2026, where he is listed as Austine Okwudiri Akobundu), and has held the seat since 15 November 2023. A graduate of the Nigerian Defence Academy (Regular Combatant Course 22), he served in the Nigerian Army Signals Corps, was aide-de-camp to the Military Governor of Bauchi State, Chris Garuba, from August 1985 to December 1987, and retired as a colonel in 2000. He chairs the Nostro Group of Industries. In the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) he was the South-East National Vice Chairman, based in Enugu, from about 2012 to 2015, and in January 2013 he was named chairman of the board of the University College Hospital, Ibadan. President Goodluck Jonathan nominated him in February 2015 and swore him in as Minister of State for Defence on 18 March 2015; he served until the cabinet was dissolved on 28 May 2015. He was elected the PDP's National Organising Secretary at its December 2017 convention and served until the new national leadership took over in December 2021. He won the PDP ticket for Abia Central on 24 May 2022 (186 of 188 votes). At the poll of 25 February 2023, INEC returned Darlington Nwokocha of the Labour Party (LP) with 92,116 votes to his 41,447. The tribunal in Umuahia dismissed his petition on 11 September 2023, but on 4 November 2023 the Court of Appeal (Lagos) held that Nwokocha was not qualified because his name was not on the membership register the LP submitted to INEC, declared Akobundu elected and ordered INEC to issue him a certificate of return. He was sworn in on 15 November 2023. Nwokocha's motions to review the judgment were dismissed by the Court of Appeal in Abuja (December 2023, N5 million costs) and by the Supreme Court (12 December 2023, N2 million costs). In the Senate he is Vice Chairman of the Committee on the Federal Capital Territory and sat on the 2025 ad hoc committee planning a national security summit. He resigned from the PDP with effect from 10 March 2026, citing the party's long-running crises, and his move to the ADC was announced in the Senate on 11 March 2026. He emerged as the ADC's consensus candidate for Abia Central at the party's May 2026 primaries, and on 24 September 2026 Atiku Abubakar named him Director-General and campaign manager of the ADC Presidential Campaign Council.
