Aniekan Etim Bassey (INEC: Bassey Aniekan Etim) is the senator for Akwa Ibom North-East (Uyo) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the district in the Senate election of 16 January 2027 (INEC final list, 12 September 2026). From Ekim Enen in Uruan Local Government Area, he gives his date of birth as 30 August 1978 and lists a first school leaving certificate from Christ the King Nursery and Primary School, Uyo, a senior secondary certificate from St Mary's Senior Science College, Abak, and bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Uyo, where he was pursuing a doctorate in anthropology in 2023; he declared a PhD to INEC for 2027. Before politics he was a businessman, and he founded the RHAB-YESS Foundation. He entered politics in 2014 and represented Uruan State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly for the PDP from 2015 to 2023. Re-elected in 2019, he was elected Speaker of the 7th Assembly on 10 June 2019, succeeding Onofiok Luke, and served until 9 June 2023; in that period he was South-South vice chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures (from November 2020), chairman of the South-South Speakers Forum and an executive member of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Africa Region. He won the PDP primary for Akwa Ibom North-East on 23 May 2022 with 272 votes after two opponents withdrew, and the Senate seat on 25 February 2023 with 98,634 votes against Emaeyak Ukpong of the APC; the election tribunal in Uyo dismissed Ukpong's petition in September 2023. Sworn in with the 10th Senate on 13 June 2023, he became deputy chairman of the Committee on Agriculture Production Services and Rural Development and a member of the ECOWAS Parliament (from April 2024). In March 2025 his motion led the Senate to set up an ad hoc committee on Cameroon's alleged annexation of Nigerian mangrove islands in Mbo, on which he sat. After Governor Umo Eno left the PDP in June 2025, Bassey followed him to the APC; his defection letter was read in the Senate on 23 July 2025. On 10 July 2025 he was named chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations, a post he still held in July 2026, and in October 2025 he joined the Senate's ad hoc committee responding to US claims of genocide against Christians. He was returned unopposed in the APC senatorial primary of 18 May 2026.
