Alex Chioma Otti (born 18 February 1965, Umuehim, Isiala Ngwa South LGA) is the Governor of Abia State and the Labour Party governorship candidate in Abia for the election of 6 February 2027 (INEC final list, 10 October 2026), with his sitting deputy, Ikechukwu Emetu, as running mate again. He won the Labour Party's direct primary across the 184 wards on 30 May 2026 as the lone aspirant with 368,230 votes (Daily Post: 368,213), having received a free nomination form from the party's national working committee on 8 May 2026. An economist, he attended Ngwa High School, Aba and Secondary Technical School, Okpuala Ngwa, graduated with a First Class in Economics from the University of Port Harcourt in 1988 and took an MBA at the University of Lagos in 1994. He joined Nigeria International Bank (Citibank) in 1989, moved to UBA in 1996, joined First Bank in 2001 where he rose to Executive Director (2005-2011), and was Group Managing Director of Diamond Bank from 1 March 2011 until his voluntary retirement in October 2014. He was made an Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) in 2014 and holds honorary doctorates from Babcock University (2009), the University of Port Harcourt (2012) and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (2013). In November 2022 he and associates floated Signature Bank; he sits on ThisDay's editorial board and writes the column 'Outside The Box'. He left the PDP for APGA on 11 November 2014 and won the APGA governorship ticket on 8 December 2014. In the April 2015 election INEC returned Okezie Ikpeazu (PDP, 264,713) over Otti (180,882) after a supplementary poll; the Court of Appeal declared Otti winner on 31 December 2015 but the Supreme Court restored Ikpeazu on 3 February 2016. In July 2015 gunmen attacked his Abuja guest house and killed a police guard. He won the APGA ticket again on 5 October 2018 but came third in the 9 March 2019 election (64,366 votes); his petition failed at the tribunal (20 September 2019), the Court of Appeal (16 November 2019) and the Supreme Court (8 January 2020). He joined the APC on 14 August 2020, withdrew from its governorship primary on 24 May 2022 alleging a predetermined outcome, and declared for the Labour Party on 27 May 2022, winning its ticket unopposed on 8 June 2022 with 454 votes. On 18 March 2023 he was elected governor with 175,467 votes against Okey Ahiwe (PDP, 88,529) and Enyinnaya Nwafor (YPP, 28,972) and was sworn in on 29 May 2023. A Federal High Court in Kano declared the Labour Party's Abia votes 'wasted' on 18 May 2023 over the party's membership register, a judgment the Court of Appeal set aside on 20 October 2023; the PDP and APC petitions against his election were dismissed by the tribunal (6 October 2023), the Court of Appeal in Lagos (2 December 2023) and the Supreme Court (12 January 2024). He is married to Priscilla Chidinma Otti, the First Lady of Abia State, and has three children.
