He won the APC ticket on 21 May 2026 as the sole aspirant, with 459,393 affirmation votes. A mechanical engineer by training, he came into politics through the pro-democracy movement against military rule and, by his own account, was Deputy National Chairman of the Campaign for Democracy. He worked as a public-affairs adviser and spokesman to President Olusegun Obasanjo (years not found) and was reported to have served El-Rufai as an aide at the FCT. He sought the PDP ticket for the Kaduna Central Senate seat in the 2011 cycle (reported loss, BLERF only), was appointed Special Adviser on Political and Intergovernmental Affairs by Governor Nasir El-Rufai in 2015, and won the Kaduna Central Senate seat on the APC on 23 February 2019 with 355,242 votes, defeating the incumbent Shehu Sani, whose petition the tribunal dismissed. In the Senate he chaired the Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions. He won the APC governorship primary on 26 May 2022 with 1,149 of 1,196 valid votes, then the general election of 18 March 2023 with 730,002 votes (47.19%) against Isah Ashiru of the PDP (719,196). A pre-election NNPP suit to disqualify him was dismissed up to the Supreme Court (14 February 2023), and the PDP election petition failed at the tribunal (28 September 2023), the Court of Appeal (24 November 2023) and the Supreme Court (19 January 2024). He was sworn in on 29 May 2023. El-Rufai, his political patron, and he are now opponents: El-Rufai has left the APC for the ADC. Sani received the Commander of the Order of the Niger on 12 June 2025 for his role in the pro-democracy struggle, and a Kaduna Polytechnic Fellowship in May 2026. His wife, Hafsat Uba Sani, is First Lady of Kaduna State.
