Nasir Idris (Mohammed Nasir Idris, popularly Kauran Gwandu), born on 6 August 1965 in Birnin Kebbi, is the Governor of Kebbi State, in office since 29 May 2023, and the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for the election of 6 February 2027 (INEC final list, 10 October 2026). APC delegates from all 225 wards affirmed him as sole candidate on 21 May 2026. In August 2026 the party replaced his running mate, Deputy Governor Umar Abubakar Tafida, with Ibrahim Muhammad Augie, a former Commissioner for Finance, citing legal advice; Tafida's aide disputed that he had been consulted. He began as a primary-school teacher in the old Bunza local government area (now Kalgo), later a schools supervisor, and rose through the Nigeria Union of Teachers: zonal and Kebbi State chairman, national treasurer and, by one report from 2018, national president (in post in January 2019 and still on 26 May 2022). He was also a state chairman and later deputy president of the Nigeria Labour Congress. He left union office to contest, and won the APC governorship primary on 26 May 2022 with 1,055 of the 1,090 votes cast, ahead of Abubakar Gari-Malam (35) and Senate Majority Leader Yahaya Abdullahi (none). INEC declared the 18 March 2023 governorship poll inconclusive; after a supplementary election on 15 April it declared him winner on 16 April with 409,225 votes to 360,940 for Aminu Bande of the PDP. Bande's petition, which alleged over-voting and a forged testimonial by the deputy governor, was dismissed by the tribunal (5 October 2023), the Court of Appeal (24 November 2023) and the Supreme Court (19 January 2024). He was sworn in on 29 May 2023. He holds a National Diploma and an MBA, has received honorary doctorates from GD Goenka University (2025) and Abdullahi Fodio University Aleiro (2026), and the Sultan of Sokoto's title Gwarzon Daular Usmaniyya (2024). His wife, Hajiya Zainab Nasare Nasir Idris, is First Lady of Kebbi State.
