Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed (born 5 October 1958 at Duguri, Alkaleri LGA, Bauchi State) is the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) candidate for Bauchi South Senatorial District in the Senate election of 16 January 2027 (INEC final list, 12 September 2026, where he appears as Mohammad Bala Abdulkadir). He has been Governor of Bauchi State since 29 May 2019. An English graduate of the University of Maiduguri (BA, 1982), he worked as a journalist with the Mirage (Jos), the News Agency of Nigeria and The Democrat. He joined the federal civil service in 1984 and rose to director of administration at the Nigerian Railway Corporation and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency. He was elected senator for Bauchi South on 21 April 2007 on the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) ticket. In the Senate he was vice-chairman of the Aviation committee and secretary of the Northern Senators Forum. During President Yar'Adua's illness he was among the first senators to call for section 144 of the Constitution to be invoked. Acting President Goodluck Jonathan appointed him Minister of the Federal Capital Territory on 6 April 2010. He moved from the ANPP to the PDP soon after and stayed in the post until the Jonathan government left office in 2015. He won the PDP governorship primary in 2018 with 1,335 votes. In the governorship election of 9 March 2019, which needed a supplementary poll on 23 March, he beat Governor Mohammed Abubakar (APC) by 515,113 votes to 500,625. The Supreme Court upheld that result on 20 January 2020. He got 20 votes in the PDP presidential primary of 28 May 2022 and was then the only candidate in the party's governorship primary on 4 June 2022. He was re-elected on 18 March 2023 with 525,280 votes to 432,272 for Sadique Abubakar (APC), and the Supreme Court affirmed the result on 12 January 2024. He chaired the PDP Governors' Forum. After the Supreme Court voided the rival PDP conventions, he left the PDP for the APM on 2 May 2026, and the APM affirmed him by consensus as its Bauchi South candidate on 28 May 2026. The EFCC detained him from 24 October to 8 December 2016. On 26 April 2018 the FCT High Court ruled that holding him after he was granted bail was illegal and awarded him N5 million. On 10 May 2017 he was arraigned at the FCT High Court on six counts of abuse of office from his time as minister, including an alleged N550 million house received as gratification and undeclared assets. He pleaded not guilty and calls the case politically motivated. The trial has been suspended since he became governor in 2019 because of his immunity. In June 2020 the ICPC seized an Abuja plot it says he allocated, as minister, to a school linked to his family; he denies any wrongdoing. Since December 2025 he has been named, though not charged, in the EFCC's terrorism-financing case against his finance commissioner and other officials. He says the agency is persecuting him for refusing to join the APC, which the EFCC denies.
