Before the ballot,
a life in the making.

The places, education and experiences behind this candidate.

Godswill Obot Akpabio (born 9 December 1962 in Ukana, Essien Udim LGA) is the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District in the Senate election of 16 January 2027 (INEC final list, 12 September 2026). A lawyer, he has been President of the Senate since 13 June 2023. He studied law at the University of Calabar (LLB 1987) and was in the Nigerian Law School's 'Class 88'. After a short spell as a teacher he worked at the law firm Paul Usoro and Co., then in telecoms as managing director of EMIS Telecoms and national publicity secretary of the telecom operators' association. Governor Victor Attah made him a commissioner in 2002 (Petroleum and Natural Resources, then Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, then Lands and Housing, to 2006). He won the 2006 PDP governorship primary against 57 aspirants and was governor of Akwa Ibom from 29 May 2007 to 29 May 2015, re-elected on 26 April 2011 with 957,585 votes; he chaired the PDP Governors' Forum from 2013. He won the Akwa Ibom North West Senate seat on 28 March 2015 (422,009 votes) and was Senate Minority Leader from 28 July 2015 until he resigned the post in August 2018 and joined the APC on 8 August 2018. He lost the seat to Chris Ekpenyong (PDP) on 23 February 2019 (83,158 to 118,215); the Court of Appeal ordered a rerun on 9 November 2019, but he withdrew to stay in government. He was Minister of Niger Delta Affairs from 21 August 2019 until he resigned in May 2022 to seek the APC presidential ticket, then stepped down for Bola Tinubu at the primary on 7 June 2022. His nomination at a disputed rerun senatorial primary (9 June 2022) was upheld by the Supreme Court on 20 January 2023; he won the seat on 25 February 2023 (115,401 votes), was elected Senate President 63-46 over Abdulaziz Yari, and won the 2027 APC ticket unopposed on 18 May 2026. He holds the CON and, since October 2024, the GCON. The EFCC has investigated allegations since 2015 that he diverted about N108 billion as governor; he denies them, and no charge had been filed as of the latest reports. In 2020 former NDDC acting head Joy Nunieh accused him of sexual harassment and fraud, which he denied. In February 2025 Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan accused him of sexual harassment; he denied it, the Senate dismissed her petition on procedural grounds and suspended her for six months over a seating dispute, and on 9 February 2026 the Court of Appeal upheld the suspension. Her defamation and harassment suits against him were pending as last reported; he withdrew his own defamation suit against her on 1 January 2026.
